Instacap: Oklahoma State Thumps Charlotte 83-65

Oklahoma State beat the brakes off Charlotte inside Gallagher-Iba Arena on Monday evening. The defense rocked. The offense … left something to be desired. But against a middle-tier Conference USA opponent, OSU took care of business to secure its second win of the season.

Don’t look now, folks, but Mike Boynton has a 100 win percentage as head coach!

Even without leading returning scorer Jeffrey Carroll, who remains sidelined pending an internal investigation, OSU managed to score 83 points, shoot 47 percent from the floor and a respectable 38 percent from the 3-point line.

Grad transfer point guard Kendall Smith lead all scorers with 19 points, 17 of which came in the first frame. Tavarius Shine continued his strong start with 17 of his own, and Thomas Dziagwa, Cam McGriff and Brandon Averette all finished in double figures. Oh, and we also maybe got the dunk of the year in the second game of the season.

The OSU defense, for a second consecutive game, appeared to be OSU’s calling card against Monday. OSU limited Charlotte to only 65 points on 35 percent shooting, scoring 18 points off 14 turnovers forced.

“We got this new defense that Coach Mike believes in, and all the guys have bought in, and it’s been working for us,” Kendall Smith said after the game. “We just have to keep working and stay consistent, and it will continue to show like it did tonight.”

Oklahoma State faces ORU on Thursday in Stillwater for its third non-conference tuneup before a pivotal showdown with top-tier SEC squad Texas A&M in the Legends Classic on Nov. 20.
