STILLWATER — The first Bedlam of the school year goes the way of the Sooners.

The Oklahoma State soccer team fell to its in-state rival 2-0 on Thursday night at Neal Patterson Stadium, marking the first time the Cowgirls have lost to the Sooners at home since 2016.

OU just about controlled the game from start to finish, as the Sooners had a 13-5 advantage in shots, a 5-0 advantage in shots on goal and an 8-4 advantage in corner kicks.

“We had some moments,” OSU coach Colin Carmichael said. “We hoped if we could get one we could climb back into it, but we didn’t create enough chances. Obviously we didn’t have a shot on goal. Had a few chances in scrambles but nothing clean. That’s something we need to work on.”

The Sooners got the scoring started in the 30th minute.

After a foul near midfield, OU sent the ball into the box. Elle Canty beat the defense to it to the right of the goal and sent the ball back across. Kate McCallister got her head to it, sending it goal bound. OSU goalkeeper Logan Marks got a glove to it, but it crossed the line on the bounce. It was reviewed and confirmed. The Cowgirls were down 1-0.

That goal seemed to spark the Cowgirls for a bit, as they started getting more possession of the ball, but OU had the next big chance when Kayle Keefer took a shot from the top of the box that Marks was able to push wide of the post.

With about 27 minutes to play, the OU keeper got some action, blocking a cross that was waiting to be followed up on, but the Sooners were the first to the ball and were able to clear it.

OU doubled its lead in the 70th. Keefer whizzed a low cross in from the right side that found it’s way to Kennedy Kasier, who coolly tapped it into the net from right outside the 6-yard box.

As noted, this marks OU’s first win in Stillwater since 2016. With OU beating the Cowgirls last season, it’s also the first time OSU has lost back-to-back against their in-state rivals since 2016. The all-time series sits at 32-12-5 in the Cowgirls’ favor.

“We want to win Bedlam,” Carmichael said. “We always want to win Bedlam. We have a great record against those guys, and the games are always intense, just like that, but after this game, there’s still, what, 16 to go. So, you can’t put all your eggs in one basket. It’d be the same for them, though. They won the game, but they’ve gotta kinda put that behind them and move on to the next one, as well. I guess it’s that old cliche — next-game mentality.”

Through their opening three games, the Cowgirls are 1-1-1. They’ll get another shot an at SEC foe next Thursday when they head to Starkville for a game against Mississippi State.

PFB photographer Devin Wilber was also roaming the sidelines at Neal Patterson Stadium on Thursday. Here are some of his best shots.
