Oklahoma State’s Bowl Winning Percentage Stands Alone Among Big 12 Schools

Published

on

The winningest Big 12 team in postseason history is not Oklahoma, Texas, Nebraska or Texas A&M but rather Oklahoma State. Only Utah, USC and Ole Miss have a better overall percentage than the Pokes (min. 20 appearances).

Here’s a look at the top 10, which includes exactly zero other Big 12 squads.

Team Wins Losses Ties Percentage
Utah 17 4 0 81%
USC 34 17 0 67%
Ole Miss 24 13 0 65%
OSU 17 10 0 63%
FSU 27 16 2 62%
Syracuse 15 9 1 62%
Penn St. 28 17 2 62%
Georgia 30 19 3 61%
Miss. St. 12 8 0 60%
Alabama 38 25 3 60%

And a look at all 27 bowls Oklahoma State has played in. There have been some pretty fascinating opponents.

OU is the closest Big 12 team, by the way, at 59 percent.

You can obviously make the point that OSU’s bowl matchups haven’t been as tough as, say, OU’s. But you have to give the Pokes credit for what they’ve accomplished thus far as they go for bowl win No. 18 on Thursday against the Hokies.

“Great front seven,” said Mason Rudolph of Oklahoma State’s challenge on Thursday in Orlando. “A bunch of tall corners. It will be a great chance to go up and compete with some good players. A Bud Foster defense is always well coached, tough to beat and tough to play.

“I feel like we have a great plan in place. We’ve had a great month of preparation. We’re going to put some finishing touches on and go play.”

Gundy has either quarterbacked or coached nine of those 17 wins, and he said recently that he’s ready to send his seniors out on a high note and doesn’t think that competitiveness will be an issue despite some probable disappointment at the outcome of the season.

“They’re competitive and they care about each other,” said Gundy. “One thing they’ve learned in our culture is to compete. It doesn’t make a difference what their record is or what our record is, you have to compete. We have an obligation to each other to compete and that’s always been the motivation for our guys.”
