Three Positions OSU Could Target in January Recruiting

Published

on

Oklahoma State signed a 22-man recruiting class in the early period where the staff addressed major needs across the board, namely at quarterback (Spencer Sanders) and at safety.

With a mere month left before the final signing day in February, OSU has two spots it could fill before reaching its 25-man cap (Summer enrollee Patrick McKaufman counted towards the 2018 class to make the class go down with 23 on paper).

Here’s what positions OSU will likely consider targeting to allot those final scholly’s.

Defensive tackle

A day before the early signing period, in-state defensive tackle Israel Antwine flipped from OSU to Colorado in a stunner. The Millwood High School standout left Oklahoma State stunned.

Feelings aside, it also leaves the staff in a total predicament too, as OSU is now without a D-tackle in the class. Mike Gundy made it clear there were players out there yet to be unearthed that were worth a look — but with Big Saucy off the board along with Moro Ojomo and Bobby Brown, I’m not convinced there are any bonafide prospects worth bringing in as OSU has exhausted all its options among players they steadily recruited this cycle.

Linebacker

Filling a spot at outside linebacker appears to be OSU’s next focus for 2018. Kolby Peel, a high school safety, is expected to be an OLB/Star for OSU, but finding another — a player like Aaron Brule to go alongside Peel — is of the utmost importance.

If OSU can’t uncover an outside backer, linebacker in general wouldn’t be a bad option. Adding depth either on the inside or weak side wouldn’t hurt, as inside-backer Blake Barron is expected to move to the SAM position in Stillwater.

Running back

If we’re going most likely to least likely to fill, I think RB is of the lowest priority on this list. OSU was in the mix for Lyn-J Dixon, who pledged to Clemson on signing day, but Dixon was a can’t-miss, must-take prospect.

OSU simply isn’t in the mix for any of those running backs on the same level as Dixon for 2018, and right now the RB stable is plenty loaded with talent. But … if a de-commitment opens a top prospect back on the market, OSU would certainly be interested.
