Houston Texans Reportedly Signing Brandon Weeden as Backup QB

Brandon Weeden is signing with the Houston Texans and will backup second-year starter Deshaun Watson, according to a report from John McClain of the Houston Chronicle on Tuesday.

Weeden spent the 2015 and 2016 seasons with the Texans before a one-year stint with the Tennessee Titans as Marcus Mariota’s backup last season.

Texans will be signing Brandon Weeden as their backup quarterback.

Although Weeden never quite panned out as a starter in the league after being drafted in the first round by the Cleveland Browns following his Oklahoma State tenure, he’s made quite a name — along with quite a salary, I’m sure — as a backup in the league.

Weeden has completed 57.9 percent of his passes (559 of 965) since joining the NFL in 2012, but hasn’t recorded a statistic since the 2015 season in which he compiled four total touchdowns and 2 fumbles. During that season, he completed 26 of 42 passes and appeared in two games.

Weeden will fill the roll of Tom Savage, who joined the New Orleans Saints this offseason after serving mostly as a backup last season for Watson. Weeden will compete with third-year pro Taylor Heinicke for backup reps, as he is the only other QB on the current roster.
