Brandon Averette Requests Release, Transferring from Oklahoma State

Oklahoma State point guard Brandon Averette will request his release and seek a transfer, he announced via Twitter on Tuesday afternoon.

Mike Boynton weighed in on Averette’s decision and wished him the best moving forward.

“Brandon and I met and talked about the future of Cowboys basketball,” said Boynton. “He felt it was in his best interest to pursue a different path for his educational and athletic career. My staff and I enjoyed coaching Brandon, and I appreciate his contributions to Oklahoma State Basketball over the past two seasons. We wish him the best as he moves forward.”

Averette saw time as a starter during his sophomore season, getting the nod for six games before Mike Boynton gave the starting job back to Kendall Smith. Averette came to Stillwater along with Brad Underwood in 2016, and had career averages of 5.8 points, 1.6 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game.

With Curtis Jones and Michael Weathers set to join OSU next season, it was unlikely Averette would see much time as a starter in a deep backcourt for 2018 and beyond. He’ll likely look to join a team that will give him a larger opportunity to make an impact.
