Daily Bullets (August 6): Mike Yurcich Might be in His Last Year at OSU
Good morning. Welcome back to Pistols Firing. Thank you for consuming our #content, and I hope you’re looking forward to this upcoming football season as much as we are.
Mike Yurcich about to be gone
But not in the way you all want him to be.
If Yurcich and coach Mike Gundy can get a nine- or 10-win finish from a 2018 Cowboy squad quarterbacked by a former walk-on (Taylor Cornelius), a first-year freshman (Spencer Sanders) or a graduate transfer from the University of Hawaii (Dru Brown), then Yurcich will be on the national short list of the hottest coordinator candidates for head-coaching jobs. If you were to bet a dollar on whether Yurcich has a Stillwater address in August 2019, you’d be smart to bet that he doesn’t. [Tulsa World]
Gundy loves Yurcich, and he should. Mike Y. has been awesome for OSU over the last few years and orchestrated the No. 2 offense in the country last year. I know everyone reading this site would be better at his job than he is at his job, but because he’s done what he’s done in Stillwater, he’s about to get a big boy spot somewhere else in the country. From Shippensburg to a HC slot in like eight years. What a world.
More QB Insight
Good notes here from Robert Allen on how camp is rolling along. I may have been was wrong about the starting QB.
The Extreme Camp participants were there and will be through Sunday and I had at least four of them come up to me and either ask or comment on how good they thought Taylor Cornelius was and is. The fans hoping for a full scale quarterback competition may be disappointed or may have to focus on the competition for second team. Cornelius continued his superb running of the offense, his good decision making, and his on target long balls. Early on there was a spectacular 55-yard completion with Tylan Wallace. [247]
No. 5 Becomes The Guy
Guerin Emig compares Justice and … Barry?
“He’s someone you look at and think, ‘I wanna be like him,’ ” redshirt freshman running back Chuba Hubbard said. “Guys want to be great, and they see greatness in him. He doesn’t need to be a vocal guy. He leads by his actions and everyone knows that.”
This is all very complimentary and very cool. Mostly, though, it’s very critical for a Cowboys program that recently had multi-year pillars like Mason Rudolph and James Washington drafted into the NFL. Now all of the attention falls on Hill. [Tulsa World]
I’m not here for the comp to the GOAT, but I am here for more young players saying they want to be great like No. 5. That’s not necessarily a common thing, but Justice and his personality are clearly a galvanizing force in Stillwater.
OSU And NCAA Notes
Marcus Keyes might get snaps at center? … GOAT on GOAT crime here — my dude Kevin Van Valkenburg writes about Nick Saban, and it is awesome … Larry Coker is going into the OK sports HOF — I love stories like this about guys who have been around … Calvin Bundage looks monstrous, confirmed by me … here’s how he’ll fit into the 4-2-5 … Pray for 11W … Can the 4-2-5 still stop the spread?
OSU soccer opens camp. I’m very intrigued by how the new facility affects them going forward.
