Film Study: Scouting TCU’s New QB Grayson Muehlstein

TCU’s offense has struggled in 2018, and one of the biggest reasons why is because of their play at quarterback. It’s not necessarily that their quarterbacks have been bad, but the Horned Frogs’ QBs can’t seem to stay healthy. The offense is now on their third-string quarterback, Grayson Muehlstein after Michael Collins’ first-quarter injury against Baylor last week.

The senior signal caller is 12 for 18 for 148 yards and one touchdown in his career. He had 137 of those yards and one score against Baylor in last week’s 16-9 win.

Muehlstein looked like what you’d expect from a third-stringer who was unexpectedly thrown into action. The Frogs leaned on the ground early and Muehlstein struggled, whether it be on decision making …

And deep throws …

Even his 65-yard touchdown pass, which was on a tunnel screen, was thrown high.

But he settled in the third quarter and showed an ability to throw downfield adequately, specifically when on the run.

The Horned Frogs will likely try and grind out a win by running the ball often and playing stout defense. But if the Cowboys can hold strong against the run on early downs and force this senior quarterback into third-and-long situations, they should have no problem holding this TCU offense to a quiet day.
