OSU Wrestling: Several Future Cowboys Had a Big Weekend
Future Pokes competed at Geary, set school records and make history,
Future Cowboys were wrestling all over the place this weekend and I thought I’d do a roundup on some of the results.
The small town of Geary, Oklahoma hosts one of the toughest wrestling tournaments in the entire country and four Cowboys were competing there.
Trevor Mastrogiovanni and the rest of Blair Academy made their way from New Jersey to Oklahoma to wrestle here. Mastrogiovanni dominated. He bonused his way through the tournament picking up falls in every match except the final where he shutout Tuttle’s Garrett Steidley with a 9-0 major decision.

Ranked second nationally at 170, Dustin Plott ran through his side of the bracket with ease to make the final and set up one of the most anticipated matches of the tournament vs. third-ranked Julian Ramirez. He dropped what ended up being a pretty controversial final 6-5. The two exchanged takedowns then Plott looked as though he may have gotten a last second takedown, but after review it wasn’t called.
OSU signees Colt Newton and Reece Witcraft entered at 132. The tournament has blind draws, so big time matchups can happen early. Witcraft is ranked No. 1 nationally at 126 and ended up taking on the No. 1 ranked wrestler at 132 Shayne Van Ness. Witcraft started out on fire in this match. He was dominating early and taking down Van Ness with ease. Van Ness then mounted a comeback and ended up pinning Witcraft in the 3rd. The match was tied up 8-8 at the time. Newton made his way to the final to face off with Van Ness and ended up injury defaulting from there which actually gave Witcraft second and landed Newton in third as Witcraft challenged. This clip of his match blew up and even made it on ESPN.
