Four Big 12 teams got conference play started this weekend.

Texas and West Virginia have an early lead on the conference table after winning the first two Big 12 games of the season. It was a rocky week for TCU and Baylor, but Iowa State might have finally figured some things out on offense. Here’s a recap of this weekend’s Big 12 action.

No. 12 Texas 36, Oklahoma State 30

The conference’s marquee matchup of the weekend was a weird one.

Texas played a fairly sound game apart from muffing two punts. But those mishaps almost led to the Cowboys leaving Austin victorious for the sixth straight time.

Sam Ehlinger threw four touchdown passes and had 351 total yards to go with his first interception of the year. Spencer Sanders out-gained the elder Ehlinger, as OSU’s freshman gunslinger had 377 total yards. But Sanders had two interceptions and a rushing touchdown.

Chuba Hubbard carried the rock 37 times, running for 121 yards and two scores. Hubbard still leads the nation in rushing with 642 yards. That’s 86 more than the nation’s second-leading rusher.

Oklahoma State hosts No. 24 Kansas State next weekend. Texas will have a week off before traveling to West Virginia.

West Virginia 29, Kansas 24

The Jayhawks had a chance on the game’s final play when Carter Stanley heaved a ball down the middle to Daylon Charlot. After a few laterals, Kansas got down to the West Virginia 12, but the game was over.

It wasn’t a clean win for the Mountaineers, but they’ll take it. It’s Neal Brown’s first Big 12 win.

Stanley had a solid day despite the loss. Kansas’ QB completed 76 percent of his passes for 275 yards, three touchdowns and an interception. Andrew Parchment was on the end of 132 of those yards. He also caught two touchdowns passes.

Kansas travels to TCU next week, and West Virginia has a week off before hosting Texas.

SMU 41, No. 25 TCU 38

How and why was TCU ranked in the first place?

SMU won its first Battle for the Iron Skillet since 2011 after a solid game from Texas transfer Shane Buechele, who threw for 288 yards and had three total touchdowns.

It looks as if freshman quarterback Max Duggan has beat out Kansas State transfer Alex Delton for TCU’s starting quarterback job. Duggan threw every pass for TCU on Saturday. He went 16-for-36 for 188 yards and three touchdowns.

TCU fumbled six times Saturday and lost three of them.

Iowa State 72, UL-Monroe 20

The Purdy train finally left the station this season.

Iowa State quarterback Brock Purdy had 510 total yards and six total touchdowns in Iowa State’s first not close games this year.

Purdy had touchdown passes of 84 and 73 yards to Deshaunte Jones and Tarique Milton, respectively.

The Cyclones travel to Baylor next week to open Big 12 play.

Baylor 21, Rice 13

Group of five Texas teams must have been stingy Saturday.

Charlie Brewer was 20-for-27 for 303 passing yards against the Owls, but Baylor struggled getting its running game going. Brewer was also the Bears’ leading rushing with 58 yards, while running backs JaMycal Hasty and Trestan Ebner combined for only 49 yards.

The Bears start Big 12 play by hosting Iowa State next weekend.
