Spencer Sanders Breaks Freshman Passing Record Eight Games into Season
Sanders set OSU’s freshman passing record with plenty of games to go.
Spencer Sanders has undoubtedly had an up-and-down start to his Cowboy career, but there are also stats to back up the claim that he is the best freshman gunslinger in program history.
Sanders set Oklahoma State’s freshman passing yards record in the Cowboys’ 34-27 victory against Iowa State on Saturday. Sanders is up to 1,739 passing yards eight games into the year, already boasting a 111-yard lead on previous record holder Donovan Woods.

Sanders got help with some yards after catch on Saturday in Ames, but the yards all count the same. He threw wide receiver screens to Tylan Wallace and Braydon Johnson that went for 71 yards and 50 yards, respectively.
The latter of those plays set the passing record.
At his current pace, Sanders would throw for 2,826 yards in a 13-game season. That would make him 1,198 yards ahead of Woods. It would also make for the ninth-most passing yards in a season in program history regardless of class.
