Hoops Preview: OSU Hosts No. 3 Kansas with NCAA Tournament Hopes Dwindling
It’s Cowboys vs. Jayhawks on big Monday.
As fun as a weekend in the SEC was for the Cowboys, they quickly return to Big 12 play against the conference’s blue blood.
After breaking its six-game losing streak against Texas A&M on Saturday, Oklahoma State hosts No. 3 Kansas in a big Monday matchup in Gallagher-Iba Arena. The Cowboys still have an outside shot of making the NCAA Tournament (they made it in Brad Underwood’s season after an 0-6 conference start), but the Big 12 is particularly unforgiving this season.
Kansas is the No. 1 team in the country according to KenPom’s adjusted efficiency margin, and the Big 12 has three teams in the top six of that ranking.
If the Cowboys were to start their tournament run Monday night, senior forward Cameron McGriff would likely be a big piece to that puzzle. McGriff played a season-low 17 minutes Saturday against the Aggies because of foul trouble, but that Big 12/SEC Challenge matchup ended up being a milestone game for the uber athlete.
McGriff became the 43rd player in program history to score 1,000 career points, doing so with a patented put-back jam against A&M.
McGriff has scored 73 of his now 1,005 career points against the Jayhawks, including outings of 20, 22 and 19.
In his two meetings with Bill Self’s crew last season, McGriff averaged 20.5 points and seven rebounds a game. But, he also fouled out of both of those contests.
“Our goals really haven’t changed as far as what we wrote in the beginning and that was finish in the top half of the Big 12 and also making the tournament,” McGriff said last week. “We definitely set ourselves a standard, and we know that we’re capable of doing it. If we’re not going to make it there, we’re gonna not have any regrets doing it. That’s what it comes down to, giving it our all every time we step on the court.”
