Kevin Peterson Re-Signs with Arizona Cardinals

Kevin Peterson made a good enough impression with Arizona Cardinals brass in 2019.

On Tuesday, the former All-Big 12 cornerback at Oklahoma State signed a one-year deal to remain in Arizona, according to a release from the team. It’s an opportunity for Peterson to string together consecutive seasons for the first time in his five-year pro career.

After going undrafted in 2016, Peterson spent time (multiple stints) with the Chicago Bears organization, but never saw the field before landing with the Rams. In 2017, Peterson earned his way from the Rams practice squad to the active roster, appearing in six games and starting in the season finale. In his first NFL start, he recorded two interceptions and a fumble recovery. Unfortunately, a knee injury in the preseason opener kept him out of all of 2018.

Peterson migrated to the desert and earned his way onto the field for Kliff Kingsbury’s Cardinals last year, appearing in 14 games and starting three. He tallied 16 total tackles (14 solo) and two passes defended. In the first year under Kingsbury, the Cardinals went 5-10-1 and finished last in the NFC West.

For every first round pick-turned-instant star, there are 20 (or 40) stories like Peterson’s, replete with roster cuts, injuries and other road blocks. Hopefully, the fast-talking Wagoner, Okla. product and NFL journeyman will finally get a chance to possibly put down roots.
