Viktor Hovland Sets Course Record, Wins BMW Championship
Hovland birdied seven times on the back nine.
Former Oklahoma State golfer Viktor Hovland had himself a Sunday.
Hovland set a course record at Olympia Fields with a 9-under 61 to win the BMW Championship by two strokes. It’s a career-low round for Hovland, who birdied seven times on the back nine — seven times. Hovland finished the tournament with a 17-under 263, ahead of Scottie Scheffler and Matt Fitzpatrick at 265.
Hovland’s Sunday round was the lowest in the history of the FedEx Cup Playoff.
“Definitely has to be the best round I’ve ever played,” Hovland told CBS. “Given the circumstances — playoff event at this golf course and finish the way that I did the last nine holes was pretty special.”
Hovland hit the turn at 2-under after birdies on holes one, three and five before bogeying seven. Then he turned into a human torch. He birdied 10, 11, 12, 14, 15, 17 and 18 like he was playing a video game or something.
Hovland takes home $3.6 million for winning the tournament and he catapults up to second in the FedEx Cup Playoffs behind Scheffler heading into the Tour Championship, the final leg of the three-tournament playoff.
