Texas Beats Tech, Clearing Cowboys’ Path to Arlington
The Cowboys’ fate is back in their hands.
The Cowboys are back in control of their Big 12 destiny.
Texas beat Texas Tech 57-7 on Friday evening in Austin clearing the way for the Cowboys to get to Arlington with a win against BYU. With Oklahoma also winning Friday, the Cowboys are in with a win, but out with a loss to the Cougars. That game is at 2:30 p.m. Saturday in Boone Pickens Stadium.
Texas’ dominant win saved the Cowboys from a convoluted tiebreaker scenario. OSU has been a favorite to get to Arlington for a while, but when the Pokes lost to UCF a few weeks back, that took full control out of their hands. Here is an updated look at the Big 12 standings going into the final day:
Team | Big 12 Record | Overall |
Texas | 8-1 | 11-1 |
Oklahoma | 7-2 | 10-2 |
Oklahoma State | 6-2 | 8-3 |
Kansas State | 6-2 | 8-3 |
West Virginia | 5-3 | 7-4 |
Iowa State | 5-3 | 6-5 |
Texas Tech | 5-4 | 6-6 |
Kansas | 4-4 | 7-4 |
TCU | 3-6 | 5-7 |
Houston | 2-6 | 4-7 |
Baylor | 2-6 | 3-8 |
BYU | 2-6 | 5-6 |
UCF | 2-6 | 5-6 |
Cincinnati | 1-7 | 3-8 |
A win against BYU would give the Cowboys the two seed via head-to-head tiebreaker over Oklahoma and Kansas State (should K-State beat Iowa State on Saturday evening). A loss against BYU would eliminate the Cowboys from contention because at least OU would finish ahead of OSU. Per notnothing.net, if OSU lost and Kansas State won, it would be a Red River Rivalry game in the Big 12 Championship. So, it looks as if the Cowboys are the Big 12’s last hope to keep the conference trophy in the conference before OU and Texas jet to the SEC.
