Lofton is from Fort Worth via North Side High School. He was a three-star prospect in the 2021 class, picking Virginia Tech over offers to TCU, Colorado, Duke, Indiana, Kansas, Mississippi State, Louisville, Penn State, SMU and others.
He played in 12 games as a true freshman in Blacksburg, catching seven passes for 98 yards and a touchdown.
Lofton started all 11 games he played in during Virginia Tech’s 2022 season, catching 22 passes for 254 yards and a pair of scores. His career-best game came as a sophomore against Duke, where Lofton caught three passes for 75 yards — including a 53-yard touchdown.
He played in all 13 of the Hokies’ games this past season, where he started just once. He caught six passes for 58 yards in 2023 but also played well on special teams. The majority of Lofton’s snaps came in the slot, according to PFF.
Lofton becomes the sixth portal commitment the Cowboys have picked up this cycle, joining safety Kobe Hylton (UTEP), offensive lineman Isaia Glass (Arizona State), tight end Tyler Foster (Ohio), defensive end Obi Ezeigbo (Gannon) and running back AJ Green (Arkansas).
The Cowboys did lose a pair of scholarship receivers to the portal in Blaine Green and Jaden Bray, but the position group is expected to return Brennan Presley, De’Zhaun Stribling, Rashod Owens and others for 2024.
