NCAA Blocking Oklahoma State from Wearing QR Codes on Helmets
No helmet QR codes after all.
The Cowboys wearing QR codes on the backs of their helmets linking to the team NIL fund caused quite a stir when it was announced earlier this month. Well, turns out, the QR codes won’t even be there.
The NCAA is blocking Oklahoma State from using the QR code helmet stickers. It comes down to the interpretation of a rule. OSU, according to a release, interprets the QR code stickers as “institutional decals permitted under NCAA bylaws.” The NCAA interprets the rule as “advertising and/or commercial marks, which are not permitted.”
“We disagree with the interpretation of the rule but will abide by it and work with the appropriate groups to lead on the needed change.” said OSU athletic director Chad Weiberg in the release. “Our people came up with an innovative concept to raise NIL value of our student-athletes, but ultimately, it just serves as the latest example of how college sports are evolving at a faster pace than the rule book.”
OSU states in the release that it consulted with the Big 12 office and felt confident the helmet decals would be allowed.
So, the QR codes won’t be on the helmets. But, they will be placed in larger and more prominent areas throughout Boone Pickens Stadium — including on the videoboard. The code will also still be on the players’ bags during “The Walk” and on coasters, signage and the equipment truck as originally planned.
