Four Quick Storylines
New Era:Â Monday night marks the first official game of the Steve Lutz era after Oklahoma State fired Mike Boynton and hired Lutz away from Western Kentucky this offseason. This will be Lutz’s fourth season as a head coach, but he has made the NCAA Tournament in each of his previous three seasons (twice with Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and once with WKU).
New Team:Â The Cowboys have 10 new scholarship players on the roster this season. The only returners from last season’s squad are Bryce Thompson, Jamyron Keller and Connor Dow. It’s an older group with only one scholarship freshman (Serbian center Andrija Vukovic) to eight scholarship seniors.
Doug Gottlieb Coaching on Eddie Sutton Court:Â OSU’s all-time leader in assists will be on the sideline of Eddie Sutton Court coaching in a Division-I basketball game … but as a visitor. Green Bay hired Gottlieb this offseason. It’ll be his first game as a college coach.
And Gottlieb Has Some Former Pokes:Â Gottlieb will bring two players with OSU ties with him. Center Isaiah Miranda was injured at the the beginning of last season but played in three games with OSU before leaving the team midway through the year. Guard Jeremiah Johnson, an Oklahoma native, is a true freshman, but he signed with the Cowboys under Boynton. After the coaching change, he found a new home with the Phoenix.
