It’s been five days since the Cowboys’ season-ending shutout loss in Boulder, and news of the future is starting to become known.

Oklahoma State is parting ways with offensive coordinator Kasey Dunn and defensive coordinator Bryan Nardo, according to FootballScoop. Brett McMurphy also reported the news. This comes after the Cowboys finished 3-9 in 2024 — the worst season of head coach Mike Gundy’s tenure. That included an 0-9 finish in Big 12 play.

Dunn came to Stillwater in 2011 as the Cowboys’ wide receivers coach. In 2019, he was named the associate head coach before taking over playcalling duties in 2020. Dunn is one of the best position coaches OSU has ever had, churning out a pair of Biletnikoff winners (could’ve been a third, but Tylan Wallace was snubbed). OSU’s wide receiver room was almost always a strength in Stillwater under Dunn.

However, the Cowboy offense as a whole was inconsistent. OSU never ranked higher than fifth in the Big 12 in scoring or total offense under Dunn, a standard that names like Dana Holgorsen, Todd Monken and Mike Yurcich set.

Returning nearly all of its production from a 10-4 2023 campaign, the Cowboys finished the 2024 season ranking 12th in the Big 12 (16 teams) in scoring offense with 27.2 points a game. The Cowboys averaged 374 yards a game, good for 13th in the league.

The 2024 season was just Nardo’s second after Gundy hired him from Division-II Gannon to implement the 3-3-5 defense. OSU’s defense was woeful in 2024, ranking 132nd of 133 in total defense, giving up 500.6 yards a game. The Cowboys ranked 125th nationally in scoring defense, giving up 35.6 points a game and 128th in rush defense, allowing 215 yards a game on the ground.
