Where Former Oklahoma State Players Landed on Initial NFL Depth Charts
There are more than 20 former Pokes competing for roster sports this preseason.
It’s unofficial depth chart season in the NFL as the opening slate of preseason games kick off Thursday.
There are more than 20 former Cowboys battling for their spots on 53-man rosters, the limit teams have to be at by Aug. 27.
Despite being released by the teams, these depth charts are label “unofficial” for the time being.
We’ll start by looking a little closer at two of the newest NFL Pokes before looking at the full list of where former Cowboys stand on their depth charts.
Ollie Gordon, Fourth String
Ollie was given the rookie treatment on this initial depth chart, being listed behind De’Von Achane, Jaylen Wright and Alexander Mattison.
Achane has been a solid back for Miami the past two seasons after the franchise took him in the third round of the 2023 draft. But Achane is listed at 5-foot-9, 191 pounds, meaning the Dolphins could use a bruiser like Gordon to play off him.
The Dolphins took Wright in the fourth round of the 2024 NFL Draft out of Tennessee. At 5-10, 208 pounds, Wright carried 68 times as a rookie, running for 249 yards.
Mattison, listed at 5-11, 220, joined the Dolphins this offseason after running for 420 yards and four touchdowns last season with the Raiders. Before that, he spent five seasons with the Vikings, where he ran for 2,370 yards and 11 touchdowns across 75 games.
“Honestly, I don’t really think about it,” said Gordon of the depth chart. “At this time, it’s too early to tell anything, and like I said, I’m here for the team. Whatever the team needs me to do, I’m here to do. Depth chart (is) not really on my mind right now. It’s about getting my offense down, being able to help my teammates, learning from my teammates, stuff like that.”
Gordon met with the media this past week where he was asked about things he studied that he did better in his Doak Walker-winning 2023 season than he did last season.
“I would say in ’23, I was just getting the ball and running downhill, honestly,” Gordon said. “You know, ’24, I was just trying to make it like a home run. I was trying to make it something instead of just taking what they gave me. I feel like working with Coach E (Miami running back coach Eric Studesville) has been great. He’s helping me, telling me everything don’t have to be a home run. Take your little four or five yards and go on about your day.”

Nick Martin, Second String
The Cowboys leading tackler from 2023, Nick Martin was the highest Cowboy taken in this year’s NFL Draft.
After taking Martin in the third round, the 49ers have Martin listed second at the WILL linebacker spot on their unofficial depth chart behind Dee Winters. Out of TCU, Winters was a sixth-round pick by San Fran in the 2023 NFL Draft. He’s made 54 tackles in his two seasons with the team.
Martin suffered a thumb injury this offseason but said Wednesday that he is full go.
“I’m excited,” said Martin of his first preseason game. “I’d probably say that’s the biggest word I got for this is just real excited and just excited to live the dream for real and actually finish these plays.”
When Martin takes the field this preseason, it’ll be the first time in a long time that he has played when the bullets are live. Martin suffered a season-ending injury in Oklahoma State’s game against Kansas State last September.
As someone who has once tackled 140 ball carriers in one college season, Martin said he is ready to get back to getting people on the ground.
“It’s been a while,” Martin said. “It’s definitely tough not going down (in practice). Definitely when you get in that mode when y’all in the hole and one of ya’ll gotta not go to the ground. That’s part of just practicing safe. Coach (Kyle) Shanahan is real evident about that and is on top of just keeping us healthy, so I understand it. We gotta protect the team.”
