Oklahoma State Fires Defensive Coordinator Todd Grantham, Clint Bowen Taking Over
More change at the top of the OSU football program.
There is more change happening at the top of the Oklahoma State football program.
OSU fired defensive coordinator Todd Grantham on Sunday. O-State Illustrated first reported the news. Grantham was at Oklahoma State for just four games after Mike Gundy hired him this past offseason. Gundy was fired Tuesday.
Clint Bowen, who was on OSU’s staff in a quality control position, will take over as the Cowboys’ interim DC.
The Cowboy defense is giving up 35 points per game, which is worst in the Big 12. OSU is giving up 473 yards per game, which is also worst in the Big 12.
OSU has given up more than 600 yards in two of its first four games. The first was the 69-3 loss to Oregon where the Ducks gained 631 yards of total offense. Then on Saturday, Baylor hung 612 yards and 45 points on the Pokes.
“If I was a fan, I would be frustrated,” said Grantham after Saturday’s loss to Baylor. “I totally get that. The one thing I have been impressed with is the passion of the fan base here.”
Bowen played at Kansas and was a longtime member of the Jayhawks’ coaching staff, serving in various roles. He has served as a defensive coordinator at Kansas (20006-09, 2014-18), Western Kentucky (2010) and North Texas (2011, 2020).
Bowen took over as KU’s interim coach in 2014 when Charlie Weis was fired.
This won’t be the first time Doug Meacham and Bowen have been coordinators on the same team, as both served in their respective roles at Kansas in 2017 and 2018. KU went a combined 4-20 those seasons.
He is also the father of OSU freshman quarterback Banks Bowen.
Clint Bowen becomes OSU’s fifth defensive coordinator in five seasons:
2021: Jim Knowles
2022: Derek Mason
2023: Bryan Nardo
