STILLWATER — After a strong start in the season opener, the Cowboys faced an early high-major test on Sunday, one that both the Cowboys and their fans passed with flying colors.
Oklahoma State took it to Texas A&M, beating the SEC Aggies 87-63 in a game the Pokes led by as many as 28.
In front of a crowd of 7,501, OSU led just about wire to wire, leading for 37:55 of the game’s 40 minutes.
OSU’s scoring was spread fairly evenly with five players scoring at least 10 points, but it was a particular good day to have a surname of Coleman.
Seton Hall transfer Isaiah Coleman made his OSU debut after missing the opener because of a violation of team rules.
He poured in 13 points Sunday while bringing in a team-high nine boards.
UAB Christian Coleman (no relation to Isaiah) continued his strong start to the year. After recording a 15-point, 11-rebound double-double in the Oral Roberts game, Christian dropped an efficient 16 points on the Aggies to go with three rebounds, two blocks and two steals.
Christian has led OSU in plus/minus in each of the opening two games, as the Cowboys are +47 in his 49 minutes on the floor this season.
The Cowboys held a 43-29 lead at the half, a half in which OSU shot 47% to A&M’s 29% with the Cowboys winning the turnover battle 7-1.
Isaiah had 11 at the break to go with six rebounds, both team-highs. He scored from the midrange and from deep. With just over nine minutes to play in the half, Coleman pump-faked in the corner before taking a hard step to the basket just to then step-back and hit a 3.
OSU went 4-for-13 from 3 in the first half. That’s just under 31%, but it’s obvious that this team is more skilled from deep than many of OSU’s previous squads.
Early in the half, Kanye Clary stepped into a contested 3-pointer and drilled it. OSU didn’t have much of that in previous seasons.

It ended up being Clary’s only make of the day, as he hit the deck after a layup attempt and got up favoring his left arm. He played just seven minutes.
OSU was also without Anthony Roy for the second time in as many games, as he is nursing a groin injury. With a healthy Roy and Clary, this team only gets better offensively.
After leading 43-29 at the break, the Cowboys opened the second half on an 11-3 run that boosted that lead to 54-32 and essentially put a fork in the Aggies.
OSU went on to outscore A&M 44-34 in the second half, led by Vyctorius Miller’s 11.
Steve Lutz challenged his defense throughout the preseason, and that unit looked the part Sunday. A&M came into the season averaging 101 points a game at 52% shooting. They scored 63 on 32% shooting against the Pokes.
The Cowboys host Prairie View A&M at 7 p.m. Wednesday in Gallagher-Iba Arena.
