Three Things UCF Coach Scott Frost Said ahead of the OSU’s Trip to Orlando

In his return season to Orlando, Scott Frost can lead the Knights to a bowl game if they’re able to win out — starting with this weekend’s game against the Cowboys.

Oklahoma State and UCF play at 3 p.m. (Central) Saturday in Orlando. UCF enters on a three-game losing streak, while the Cowboys enter on a nine-game losing streak. Something has to give.

Frost met with reporters this week to preview the matchup. Here are three things he said.

1. On the Cowboys Still Fighting

Opposing coaches have consistently praised this OSU team for continuing to fight despite the dire circumstance.

Frost reiterated that fact this week by pointing to the Cowboys’ hanging tight with Kansas State — a team that beat the Knights 34-20 in late September.

“One thing I give them a lot of credit for is you don’t see a team that’s given up,” Frost said. “They played a good Kansas State team last week and fought them right to the end in a 14-6 game. So even with a coaching change, the guys that have taken over that program are obviously doing a good job with the morale. You see a bunch of guys playing hard, and it showed up last week with a tight game with a good team.”

2. On Mike Gundy

Frost is one of the few people on the planet who knows what it feels like to be fired by your alma mater, something he has in common with Mike Gundy.

Frost, a former safety at Nebraska, coached his Cornhuskers from 2018 to 2022, going 16-31 in that stretch before returning to UCF, where he was before taking that job in Lincoln.

Gundy, a former quarterback at Oklahoma State, was let go three games into this season, ending a 21-year tenure as the Cowboys’ head coach that saw OSU go 170-90.

“I know Mike a little bit, not really well,” Frost said. “I certainly respect what he accomplished there. That’s an awfully good run to be in one place as long as he was. It’s not very often in this business that you get to go out on your own terms and things end well. And you’re lucky if you’re one of those guys. But over time, I hope everybody looks back on his career and the success he has and see what a good run he had at Oklahoma State. And I think that’s how history will remember it.”

3. Senior Day Knight

With this game kicking at 3 p.m. (Central), it’ll be Senior Day at UCF, but also Senior Knight.

UCF has gone 4-2 in the Bounce House in Frost’s return season. Here’s what Frost said about closing out the home schedule in his return.

“It’s great to be back,” Frost said. “I really do love my job. I love being in Orlando. This is a challenge, and sometimes you gotta embrace the hard as you’re going through it to get where you want to get. I know our players aren’t satisfied with the results so far, but they’ve been putting in work. We’ve gotta keep improving here at the end of the season. We need to play better this week than we played last week. All in all, it’s been a great experience, just not quite the results we want right now. But we have a chance to change that this week.”
