OSU Baseball: Cowboys Rally to Top Red Raiders 9-8, Secure Series Win

The Cowboys got a much-needed series win in West Texas.

Oklahoma State defeated Texas Tech 9-8 on the road to secure its third Big 12 series win, despite trailing 6-3 after six and being out-hit 14-12.

The Red Raiders struck first on a Tracer Lopez two-RBI double, but the Cowboys took the lead with a three-run third inning.

Tech added a run in the fifth and then opened up a 6-3 lead with three more in the bottom of the sixth, including a Kyeler Thompson homer.

Stormy Rhodes got the start on the bump for the Cowboys, allowing nine hits and five runs while walking four and striking out three. After that Thompson home run, OSU went to Drew Blake, but he only lasted two batters (a walk and a strikeout) before Jake Kennedy entered the fray and gave up a two-run double.

A returning Noah Wech got some burn in the seventh and eighth before Hudson Barrett came in to earn the W, though it wasn’t all smooth sailing.

The Pokes regained the lead with a pair of RBI doubles by Campbell Smithwick and Colin Brueggemann following Alex Conover’s solo home run to start the seventh inning.

Kollin Ritchie drilled a two-run bomb deep over the left field wall to push OSU’s lead to 9-6 in the top of the eighth.

But the Red Raiders weren’t going down without a fight.

In the bottom of the eighth, Tech’s Jace Souza and Logan Hughes each added RBIs against Barrett to pull within 9-8. But Barrett turned around and retired the next two, stranding two Red Raiders (the leading run).

Tech went with Jorden Espinoza to try to keep things close, and he was good for a 1-2-3 ninth inning, leaving it up to Barrett to close it out. But things started to look dicey for the Cowboys.

Tech’s Matt Quintanar drilled a lead-off single to center field. Then Barrett walked the next Red Raider in four pitches to put the winning run on base with no outs. But Barrett struck out Ryan Coleman on a bunt before things got weird.

Tech’s Kyeler Thompson was back at the plate with a chance to walk it off, but an interference call on Quintanar ended the game somewhat unceremoniously.

The Red Raiders catcher slid past third taking out the legs of Aidan Meola who took exception. The two were separated by coaches and officials. The play was reviewed and, by rule, not only was Quintanar out at third, his interference resulted in an automatic out of Thompson and ended the game.

With the win, the Cowboys earn their third Big 12 series win. They’re 27-16 on the year and 10-10 in conference play. The series finale was pushed up to 11 a.m. Sunday in Lubbock, with inclement weather expected.
