Five Thoughts on Oklahoma State’s Second Game in Puerto Rico

The Cowboys left not doubt.

Oklahoma State won its second game in Puerto Rico 120-92 on Monday night. OSU has Tuesday off before playing a different team Wednesday night.

Hello Latrell Allmond

After playing just eight minutes on Sunday night, Oklahoma State’s latest McDonald’s All-American had his fingerprints all over this one.

Listed at 6-foot-8 with a 7-foot wingspan, Allmond scored 17 points in 22 minutes on Monday, going 8-for-9 from the field. He also brought in seven boards and had two steals.

He was scoring from all over the place, but his most impressive bucket came when he drove the lane in the first half and threw down a tomahawk jam. With how long Allmond’s arms are, it looked as if this thing was thrown down from the heavens.

He also hit a smooth pair of midrange jumpers in the first half. And in back-to-back possessions in the second half, Allmond hit a 3 and scored on a breakaway in which he was also fouled (missed the free throw).

Parker Robinson Is Super Interesting

From one freshman to another: Parker Robinson, at 6-foot-4, led the Cowboys in scoring Tuesday, dropping 18 points in 17 minutes of action.

He hit a couple of 3s late, finishing 2-for-3 from deep.

Robinson is playing more point guard than I initially thought he might. It’s July in Puerto Rico, but Lutz hasn’t been afraid to throw him out there without Kanye Clary or Jacob Walker on the floor to be the team’s primary ball-handler.

Robinson provides a little bit of everything, a combo guard in the truest sense. He finished Monday’s game with the 18 points (8-for-10), three rebounds and three assists.

Ryan Crotty Getting Going

It was only a matter of time before Ryan Crotty started finding his rhythm in an OSU uniform.

Crotty went 4-for-7 from 3-point range Monday, finishing with 12 points, four rebounds, two assists and two steals.

Crotty was an uber-prolific 3-point shooting prospect coming out of the high school ranks. He hit 247 3s across his last two seasons of high school, including a Virginia state record 142 on 46% shooting as a junior.

But with inconsistent minutes as a freshman came inconsistent shooting, as he went 16-for-54 (30%) in his first year of college ball.

Everyone you speak to about Crotty tells you how often he is in the gym. That goes all the way back to Lutz meeting with the media last football season before Crotty had ever played in a college game. So, like I said, it was only a matter of time.

4. Jacob Walker Having Little Issue Getting to the Basket

Jacob Walker is perhaps the most unheralded addition of the offseason, which goes to show how well Lutz and Co. did in the portal considering Walker is the reigning Conference-USA Sixth Man of the Year.

This could have something to do with the level of competition, but thus far, Walker has looked great when attacking the basket.

After scoring 11 points on Sunday, Walker again had 11 Monday, going 4-for-7 on 2-point attempts and 1-for-5 from 3.

It hasn’t been super flashy getting to the basket, but rather a nice controlled gather and lay-in. Sort of feels like a Chris Paul-esque scorer.

Another Fun Lineup

The live stream of this game was down for much of the first quarter, but when it finally ticked on, Jordan Burks (6-foot-9), Latrell Allmond (6-foot-8) and Julius Halaifonua (7-feet) were all on the floor together.

Lutz prefers to run a man-to-man defense, but if that trio is at the bottom of a 2-3 zone, they might cover the entire width of the floor.

Burks was playing the small forward in that group, I believe. Another example in how versatile he is despite his length.
