Series History: Oklahoma State a Short, but Sordid History with Oregon

The Cowboys’ home opener looks to be a little bit less exciting after a head-scratching loss to Tulsa in Week 1. If things don’t get figured out very quickly, OSU fans could be in for another long Saturday with No. 6 Oregon coming to town.

Let’s take a look at the short history between the two schools but first, here are the particulars.

I’m going to assume that most of us are pretty familiar with last year’s game. To touch on it briefly, the Cowboys got embarrassed by the Ducks to the tune of a LOT to a little. Oregon started with a 59-yard touchdown run by Noah Whittingham followed less than a minute later with a 65-yard touchdown connection between quarterback Dante Moore and receiver Dakorien Moore. The Ducks didn’t look back. Chunk play after chunk play decimated the Pokes’ defense and sent the scoreboard up into absurdity. I think I just kind of blacked at some point in the first quarter.

It was the worst loss in Mike Gundy’s career at OSU and the largest deficit at OSU in over a century. A week later, the Cowboys lost to Tulsa at home and then they fired their head coach.

Holiday Bowl (2008)

The first time OSU and Oregon met, the Cowboys were just getting going under Gundy. It was the Cowboys’ third straight bowl game in Gundy’s fourth season, a streak which would last 18 years. Unfortunately, it was also his first postseason loss.

It was Dez Bryant’s breakout year, and Zac Robinson was at the height of his powers, which made the ending of this one so disappointing for OSU fans.

Coming in the Cowboys, who had been ranked as high as No. 8 had dropped to No. 13 after losing three of their last four games. Those were to No. 1 Texas, No. 2 Texas Tech, and No. 3 Oklahoma, respectively. They also beat No. 3 Missouri earlier in the season.

Oregon came in as the slight underdog, ranked 15th in the nation after winning their last three including a Top 20 matchup with in-state rival Oregon State.

Byrant and Kendall Hunter each crossed the goal line in the first quarter to help the Cowboys take a 17-7 lead which they retained into the second half. But a pair of interceptions by Robinson and an absolute beatdown on the ground, allowed the Ducks to outscore the Cowboys 35-14 in the second half.

Quarterback Jeremiah Masoli threw for 258 yards, a touchdown and a pick, but he also rushed for 106 yards and three more scores. Ducks running back Jeremiah Johnson added 119 yards and a rushing score.

Hunter had another TD and Robinson rushed for one to take the lead back at 31-28 early in the fourth, but the Cowboys next three drives went: punt, punt, turnover on downs while the Ducks scored consecutive touchdowns to put it away.
