‘He’s throwing the same type of throw that we see happens in the NFL all the time.’

Mike Gundy talking Drew Mestemaker — what a time to be alive.
The former Oklahoma State ball coach went on Bleacher Report’s BR Big Board, which released on Wednesday, as Gundy and Mike Renner broke down how Mestemaker could be the No. 1 pick in the NFL Draft.
It was about a seven-minute video Bleacher Report uploaded, where the two go over a few plays Mestemaker made this past weekend against Iowa State before talking about the draft as a whole.
The first play Gundy was on the board for was Mestemaker’s 41-yard touchdown pass to Justin Bowick.
That’s that MESTEMAKER ➡️ BOWICK connection 😮💨

“If you look right here, he’s gonna sit in the pocket and take a hit,” Gundy said. “He’s throwing the same type of throw that we see happens in the NFL all the time. It’s one-on-one coverage. The quarterback’s gotta get rid of the ball quick. This ball was gone in less than 2 seconds. In that time, he’s sitting here in the pocket. We have an unblocked player coming in, and the ball is gonna get thrown — and here’s where it’s gotta be, right here. We know that he might have just as good a chance, the Iowa State player, as the Oklahoma State player, but in the NFL, that’s the throws that have to be made.
“Quarterbacks have to put it in that spot, and they have to be willing to get rid of the ball quickly to do it.”
Next they looked at Mestemaker’s heroic fourth-down conversion in the fourth quarter. Had OSU ended up winning this game, this play would’ve been talked about a whole lot more.
But on 4th-and-3, Mestemaker spins out of a tackle before going full Mr. Fantastic and stretching the ball to the line to gain.
THIS KID IS INSANE: Oklahoma State QB Drew Mestemaker made one of the BEST effort plays you’ll ever see.
He spun out of a tackle, used his arm to keep himself off the turf, then dove forward for a first down.

“At this point in the game right here, Oklahoma State is forced into going for a 4th-and-3,” Gundy said. “They’re on their own 32-yard line, which is not a good place to go for the 4th-and-3, and everybody’s covered. And he makes an unbelievable athletic play right here to convert. …
“I call this a CCI (can’t coach it). There’s not any coaches around that can make that play. … Look what has to happen — his body has to stay off the ground, and he extends for the first down, kept the drive going. In my opinion, the game would’ve been over if he doesn’t make that play at that particular point.”
Then the two discussed how Mestemaker could end up going No. 1 overall.
Renner has Ohio State’s Jeremiah Smith, South Carolina’s Dylan Stewart and Notre Dame’s Leonard Moore ahead of Mestemaker on his big board, but the argument to be had is Mestemaker is the only quarterback of that group, meaning he’s the only one of those players to touch the ball on every play.
Entering the NFL’s Week 9, the New York Jets would have three Top 10 picks, which is why they think the Jets might be in the market for moving up for a quarterback.
“They’re the team that’s got all the cards,” Gundy said. “The Chargers, they don’t need a quarterback. The Titans, they don’t need a quarterback. The Dolphins needs a quarterback. So the Jets are looking at how can we get in front of the Dolphins and take a guy that touches the ball 68 to 70 times a game.
“We all know Jeremiah Smith is a great player, but a good NFL game, he touches it eight or nine times a game. So, why wouldn’t the Jets trade with these guys (the Chargers), get the quarterback they want in Mestemaker, let (the Chargers) move down. They still get Jeremiah Smith and other picks because they’re winless at this point. I’m guessing they’re gonna need more than one player.”
After a messy end of an era that wasn’t necessarily fun for anyone, it’s cool to see Gundy talking about the next era of Pokes.
