OSU Commit Dillon Stoner Brings new Meaning to Versatility

Friday night I was able to head down to the Backyard Bowl in Tulsa – a rivalry that features arguably the top teams in 6A-2 in Oklahoma – the Union Redskins and the Jenks Trojans.

Oklahoma State verbal commitment Dillon Stoner did not disappointment.

Stoner has been recruited to play receiver for the Cowboys, where he shone. But that isn’t the only position he excels at.

He starts on both sides of the ball for the Trojans, and the first big play came when the Union quarterback threw his way – where Stoner read the pass and was able to bust up a tunnel screen for a five-yard loss. As far as I watched, his defender didn’t catch another pass the rest of the game. They didn’t even look his way.

Offensively, he finished the game with two touchdown catches, one being what was the major difference maker. In the third quarter, Stoner absolutely torched the Union defense deep with a double move that created just enough space between him and the defender. It was the biggest play of the game – a 75-yard touchdown reception that put his team up 31-27.

The Trojans never looked back after that.

Not only did he play cornerback and receiver, he also was the field goal place holder, punt and kick returner, and even gave it a whack at punting.

His only punt on the night was a 53-yard boom. (Watch out, Zach Sinor.)

He finished the night with 10 receptions, 170 yards receiving. But the impact on special teams and on defense don’t necessarily show up in the box score. Oklahoma State is getting a good one with a ton of versatility in Stoner.
