Checking In On: Corey Brown

A one-time Big 12 freshman of the year and two-time All-American for Oklahoma State, Corey Brown, was called up by the Washington Nationals on Saturday.

He joins a suddenly-getting-crowded Nationals outfield along with Bryce Harper (you may have heard of him?), Rick Ankiel, and Xavier Nady. Jayson Werth was put on the 60-man DL to accomodate Brown.

The sweet-swinging lefty got called up at the end of last year for a trio of ABs before re-starting the season at Syracuse, which is the AAA team for Washington. That call-up was a bit odd considering how much he struggled in 2011: hitting only .235 with 14 HR and 39 RBI in 124 games.

Conversely this year, he got off to a Josh Hamiltonian start, hitting .297 with 12 HR and 30 RBI already through 48 games, including a five-game stretch in which he hit a bomb in every game.

As a self-declared lover of raw athletic talent, Brown is anatomically structured about as perfectly as you can imagine a baseball player being structured. He would have been the best player on this year’s OSU team and if they would have made him bat right handed, he still probably would have been the third or fourth best.

Many more 50-game stretches where he hits .300 with double-digit bombs and Nationals fans are going to have a nice Harper-Brown corner OF duo to go along with their nasty young staff for the next half decade.

I guess it’s good to be a Nationals fan…?
