The Good and the Bad
Robert Allen gives his thoughts on how college football’s new early signing period will affect the Cowboys.
Positive
1. It allows Oklahoma State to put to bed all those recruits that sign with OSU and not risk late poachers that think they can steal a commitment from the Cowboys. [GoPokes $$$]
This feels like the biggest effect for sure. But there’s a weaker con to evaluate it against.
Negative
1. Honestly, Oklahoma State has gone late on players committed to other schools and turned them. Those prospects won’t be there any longer. Now, also fair to point out that when Oklahoma State has done that it has often been because they lost a commitment or a player they were in a close battle with. [GoPokes $$$]
More often than not, the late adds seem to be the result of a late flip (Marcus Keyes for example). Gundy notoriously gets home from the club early (signs his players early), with everybody signed and no surprises, signing day 2017 was a total snoozefest in Stillwater.
Still feels like a net gain.
Long Road to Stillwater
With the Cowgirls one win from being back in the NCAA Championships, their No. 1 player has faced much greater challenges growing up in eastern Europe.
An active child, (Katarina) Adamovic picked up tennis when a commercial about the sport came on television when she was 6 years old.
She immediately took a liking to it, but soon had to put it aside because of instability in her country.
In the spring of 1999, Serbia — which was then still known as the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia — was the target of NATO airstrikes in the Kosovo War. The airstrikes intended to put an end to the conflict between the Serbian military and Kosovar Albanians. Per NATO’s website, an estimated 1.5 million people were expelled from their homes in Kosovo, “some 225,000 Kosovar men were believed to be missing,” and “at least 5,000 Kosvars (sic) had been executed.”
The bombing lasted 78 days.
For those few months, it put fear in the minds of Adamovic and her parents. [TulsaWorld]
It’s easy for me to forget the privilege of growing up in political/economic stability and certainly startling to read detailed accounts of less fortunate situations. Incredible to see what some folks have to overcome at an early age.
