OSU Football Fall Camp Report: Mike Gundy Assesses Team After First Scrimmage
Following the Cowboys’ first live scrimmage of fall camp, head coach Mike Gundy talked about the progress his team has made and where several position battles sit roughly halfway through fall camp.
On position battles
“Within the next days, we’re going to have to decide who our backup quarterback is. We’ve got to get down to three running backs. We’ve got to decide who’s going to be out there first in the secondary. Who’s going to be the nickel guy. Who’s going to be the dime guy.”
On the positions that are somewhat set
“I think a lot of decisions are made up front, in the front seven on defense. At the wideout position, we kind of know where we’re at.”
On the kicking battle between Matt Ammendola and Jake McClure
“I’m feeling better about the kicking position. We’ve worked it a lot. Getting pretty comfortable with that.”
On the defense, especially his young but fast secondary
“Defensively, I was hoping we’re fast. I think we are fast. We just don’t have enough snaps in live settings for all the young kids we have that can play this year. But there’s not anything we can do about that. We’ve got to get the most out of whatever snaps we have for those kids.”
On how to spread those limited snaps around to where needed
“We’re going to do some scout work this week. We may have a few guys that go half scouts, half work with the 2s just depending on how they feel after this video tape from the scrimmage.”
