Chasing History: Where Rudolph, Washington Stand in OSU Record Books
Oklahoma State dropped a game on Saturday to TCU, but the Mason Rudolph to James Washington connection wasn’t short of fireworks.
The duo connected six times for 145 yards and one TD that lifted Washington over Dez Bryant on the all-time TD reception list. Rudolph, for his part, extended his lead on Brandon Weeden on the passing yards list and inched closer to the G.O.A.T.’s passing TD’s mark, too.
QB | Pass Yards | Pass TDs |
---|---|---|
Mason Rudolph | 10,247 | 68 |
Brandon Weeden | 9,260 | 75 |
Mike Gundy | 8,473 | 57 |
Zac Robinson | 8,317 | 66 |
Josh Fields | 6,090 | 55 |
Rudolph’s 2 TDs through the air broke the tie with Zac Robinson and moved him to 68 overall in his career, now just 7 shy of Weeden’s record. He need only to average less than a TD pass per game to surpass Weeden in that category in the regular season, and with at least 2 in each game this season, that record theoretically should fall rather quickly if he can continue his pace.
He is now No. 2 on the all-time OSU passing TDs list. Here’s the same chart sorted by pass TDs.
QB | Pass Yards | Pass TDs |
---|---|---|
Brandon Weeden | 9,260 | 75 |
Mason Rudolph | 10,247 | 68 |
Zac Robinson | 8,317 | 66 |
Mike Gundy | 8,473 | 57 |
Josh Fields | 6,090 | 55 |
Washington only had 145 yards through the air, thanks largely to this 86-yard #RudytoWash bomb that gave OSU its only lead of the game. He’s now firmly within striking distance to pass Hart Lee Dykes on the yards receiving list, and with 122 yards against Texas Tech, he could leap frog both Dykes and Justin Blackmon. Pretty impressive stuff, eh?
WR | Receiving Yards | Receiving TDs |
---|---|---|
Rashaun Woods | 4,414 | 42 |
Justin Blackmon | 3,564 | 40 |
Hart Lee Dykes | 3,510 | 31 |
James Washington | 3,443 | 30 |
D’Juan Woods | 2,751 | 20 |
Dez Bryant | 2,425 | 29 |
Spinning this forward, Washington needs to average 122 yards per game to pass Woods on the receiving yards list in the regular season, and 108 per game operating under the assumption that OSU goes bowling.
Another stat category Washington is dominating, albeit non-OSU record book related, is yards receiving nationally. Despite catching fewer catches than 13 of the nation’s leading receivers, Washington is second nationally with 520 yards — 13 behind leader Cam Phillips — thanks to an NCAA leading 27.4 yards per catch this season.
Player | Team | Rec | Rec yds | YPC |
---|---|---|---|---|
Cam Phillips | Virginia Tech | 34 | 523 | 15.4 |
James Washington | Oklahoma State | 19 | 520 | 27.4 |
Steve Ishmael | Syracuse | 45 | 512 | 11.4 |
Cody Thompson | Toledo | 27 | 505 | 18.7 |
Darren Carrington | Utah | 30 | 485 | 16.2 |
