OSU Target Elijah Weaver Picks USC over Oklahoma State

Oklahoma State point guard target Elijah Weaver, a four-star class of 2018 prospect, committed to USC on Monday night over OSU, Florida and Ohio State.

Weaver picked the Trojans, a program dealing with an FBI probe similarly to Oklahoma State, just weeks after assistant coach Tony Bland was arrested in connection with the corruption scandal in college basketball. He says that unexpected development delayed his decision, but didn’t affect it in the end.

“I just wanted to see what would happen and my parents just thought the best thing I could do at the time was hold off and continue to see what might happen,” Weaver told Rivals.com of his thoughts on Bland’s arrest.

“They just keep reassuring me that everything is going to be fine,” he continued. “I talk to coach Enfield all the time and he has remained positive with me that nothing is going to happen to them or the university.”

Weaver was a longtime OSU target whose main recruiter was Lamont Evans, the former OSU associate head coach who was implicated in the FBI’s report unveiling the dark underbelly of the sport. Since that time, OSU and Weaver lost steady contact and he began trending in a different direction shortly after his official visit in mid-September.

Although OSU did get good news on Sunday when it landed a commitment from 6-foot-10 big man Duncan Demuth, missing out on Weaver isn’t a good sign for OSU’s 2018 class in the short term. With top PG targets Ayo Dosunmu and Weaver now off the board, there’s not an immediate backup plan at the position for 2018.

OSU has made contact with former Louisville pledge Courtney Ramey to gauge his interest, however it’s unlikely Ramey considers the Pokes after passing the first time around and recently backing away from another program currently under the FBI’s microscope.
