Baker Mayfield’s Career Ended at the Rose Bowl, and the Crying Jordan Memes Were Glorious

Baker Mayfield’s career is over. It feels good to type those words. No more haunting 550-yard performances. No more fu manchus. No more whippings at the hands of No. 6. It’s done. It is finished.

And it ended quite dramatically. Georgia squeaked by OU in the Rose Bowl on Monday 54-48 in one of the all-time best college football games, and Mayfield put on a show. For the first half, anyway. The final two quarters went poorly, though, and six looked like he’d just sat down for dinner with his in-laws after taking too many laxatives.

It was … well it was kind of great. But it was also kind of a bummer. Baker has been awesome for college football, awesome for the Big 12 and the perfect Villain for Oklahoma State fans. I mean, the perfect Villain. So while I didn’t want OU to win it all, it’s a pretty cold reality that the Rudolph-Mayfield shows are over.

There was an internet encore, though, at least for Mayfield. And it was incredible. I respect the game and love The Game Baker plays with the CFB world. He is its greatest showman, but with that comes the inevitable fallout when it goes south. He knows that. It’s why he said this about Georgia taunting him afterwards.

“They can say what they want,” Mayfield told reporters, “they won the game.”

Anyway, my favorite part about the entire Rose Bowl is all of OU Nation pretending like they didn’t know the onslaught of Crying Jordan memes were coming for Mayfield once that L was handed out. Like, you thought OSU fans and Texas fans and everybody else was just going to sit there and think, “gee, what a great contest … that was swell”?

Please.

Here are some of the best (and they are all spectacular).
