Another Look at That Late 2-Point Conversion Attempt from Bedlam
Mike Gundy talks decision, playcaling that went into 2-point converion attempt.
Oklahoma State’s season came down to one play, 3 yards off of the goal line, and the Cowboys came up short.
Taylor Cornelius rolled right (something Gundy previously stated he shouldn’t do) on his final play of the game with a chance to put his team in the driver’s seat to an huge upset win.
But a missed throw into coverage would all but seal the Cowboys’ fate and their fifth loss of the season.
After the game, Mike Gundy dismissed the notion that an early missed field goal and missed PAT had anything to do with his decision to go for 2.
For what it’s worth, I was absolutely on board with the decision to go for 2, and not just because of Matt Ammendola’s missed PAT earlier in the second half — although that was part of it for me.
Gundy was asked if the players were on board with going for two at the end of the game. “I don’t give a sh** what they think.” ? pic.twitter.com/tJWY7EjfLx

I had visions of Dana Holgorsen maniacal on the sidelines and wondered if Gundy would live up to his own rogue hairstyle. He did — all game.
Whether it was driving down to score with a minute left in the second quarter, or trying to win it with a minute left in regulation — and at most points in between — Gundy coached this game to win for the second straight year. Neither has produced the desired result but my biggest gripes about the OSU head man from Bedlams past have not played a factor.
Knowing what I know about this game and #okstate's history with it, I feel confident saying that missed extra point definitely won't come back to haunt them.

“I don’t know if you can ever make that decision [ahead of time],” said Gundy. “But as the game was going back and forth, you know, on the road. Struggled stopping them, [it was] probably the best thing.
“We had a shot at it, just didn’t make a good throw.”
Another look at the play shows an inaccurate throw behind Tylan Wallace. You could probably talk me out of this play call, with Cornelius’ ability to run — and the aforementioned inability to roll right — but execution was the issue.
Gundy doesn’t regret the play call itself.
“We go into every game with two 2-point plays,” Gundy said. “We had man coverage, had a guy on a flat route, just didn’t make a good throw. Had a shot to put the ball out front and get a chance to go catch.”
The Cowboys came this close to pulling out what would have been a huge upset and a boon to Gundy’s career resume’, but now we have just a couple more What-Ifs to throw into a post next year.
