Bedlam Softball: Cowgirls Fall 11-3 to OU in Oklahoma City
The Cowgirls got on the board early, but OU ran away with it after that.
OKLAHOMA CITY — The Cowgirls raced out to an early lead in front of a record crowd, but the Sooners have won four straight national titles for a reason.
Oklahoma State fell to Oklahoma 11-3 in five innings on Wednesday evening at Devon Park. OSU jumped out to a 3-0 lead before OU scored 11 runs in three innings en route to its run-rule win.
“Obviously not the way we drew this up,” OSU coach Kenny Gajewski said. “Feel bad for our fans who showed up here tonight, and feel bad for these guys here. It just didn’t happen here tonight. …
“Obviously not the way we wanted this to go. It’s frustrating. Feel embarrassed for our fans. They busted their butts to make it here on a Wednesday night. But great opportunity to play here, to be a part of this game.”
OSU (23-12) got out to an early lead, taking advantage of Sooner mishaps to do so. With Tia Warsop on first, Rosie Davis chopped a ball back to OU pitcher Sam Landry. The ball skipped off the top of her glove, and she tried a running scoop toss to first that got past the first baseman. The speedy Warsop scored from first, and Davis ended up on second.

That brought up Amanda Hasler. She chopped a ball to third that Nelly McEnroe-Marinas couldn’t handle. The ball bounced passed her and into shallow left, allowing Davis to score from second to make it 2-0.

And it got better before it got worse.
Davis got back up to the plate third and sent a ball over the fence to right-center. The solo shot made it 3-0.

The Sooners got a pair of runs back in the bottom of the third, but the Cowgirls had a chance to really blow things open in the fourth. OSU had the bases loaded with no outs. Tallen Edwards had the first crack at clearing the bags, and she drilled a ball that OU second baseman Ailana Agbayani made an outstanding play on to save at least two runs. Warsop struck out for out No. 2, and then Davis grounded out to end the inning.
OU made the Cowgirls pay for not being able to capitalize in that spot, as the Sooners put up five runs in the bottom of the inning. After the last of those scored, OSU made a pitching change, taking out ace Ruby Meylan for sophomore Katie Kutz. Kutz ended the inning with a groundout.
OSU went three up, three down in the fifth before the Sooners pounded four more runs across the plate to end things via run rule.
It was Meylan’s first Bedlam, and it came in front of 9,259 fans — an NCAA regular season record. Meylan said there were some extra nerves coming into this one and that she threw up before the game started. She pitched 3 2/3 innings where she gave up seven runs (five earned) on six hits while walking four and striking out two.
OSU went 5-for-22 at the plate with no Cowgirl getting more than one hit.
“Any time (Meylan) doesn’t throw a zero, she’s the first one to walk in and say, ‘It’s on me,'” Gajewski said. “It’s time for us as an offense to maybe score 10 runs for one time. It’s time for us to pick her up, and we’re not doing that enough yet as an offense. When we can start to do the things that I think we’re capable of, it’s gonna take some pressure off her, and Katie, and the others.
“Until that happens, when you gotta keep teams down every single time, it’s tough. So we gotta get our offense in check.”
The Cowgirls return home for the first time in a long time this weekend. Oklahoma State hosts Iowa State in a three-game series. All three games will be at noon on Friday, Saturday and Sunday because of The Boys From Oklahoma concerts taking place in Boone Pickens Stadium during the evenings. Those will be the first games OSU has played at Cowgirl Stadium since March 23.
“I told our team afterwards we can’t keep saying, ‘Here it goes again,'” Gajewski said. “We gotta find a way to get tougher, and we gotta find a way to dig in and go. That’s what this team is lacking right now. It’s just lacking that last little toughness piece to get us through.
“We’ll get there. I know I’m positive Perry here, but it’s how I feel. I love these kids, and I’ve seen it happen. It’s just a matter of us getting some momentum, and we just can’t seem to get it right now. But I feel good about these guys here. I do. I feel good about the way they’ll bounce back.”
