Big 12 Update: Conference Finishes Week 1 Unbeaten

There is one unbeaten conference left in college football, and it’s not the SEC.

After one week, the Big 12 is the only conference in the FBS with a perfect record.

They weren’t all pretty, but the conference heads to Week 2 10-0. Here is a look around the Big 12 from the first week of college football.

Oklahoma State 52, Oregon State 36

The Cowboys got the conference’s season started with a fun display of offense with their win in Corvallis.

Redshirt freshman quarterback Spencer Sanders drew his first career start and was outstanding. The former All-Texas everything gunslinger finished with 203 passing yards, 109 rushing yards, three touchdowns and crucially no turnovers.

Not to be outdone, Chuba Hubbard ran for 221 yards and leads the country in rushing after Week 1. He also had three touchdowns.

The Cowboys host McNeese State next weekend.

Kansas 24, Indiana State 17

Kansas has never lost a football game … under Les Miles.

After some quarterback questions entering the game, Carter Stanley got the nod, and he played well. The senior completed 69 percent of his passes for 241 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions.

The Jayhawks struggled holding onto the football, fumbling four times, and Indiana State recovered three of them. One of those fumbles was recovered in the end zone with less than five minutes to go. The scored tied the game at 17 before Stanley led the Jayhawks down the field and got the go-ahead score with a 22-yard pass to Daylon Charlot.

Miles and Kansas host Coastal Carolina next weekend.

No. 21 Iowa State 29, Northern Iowa 26 (3OT)

Anyone who had Kansas winning and Iowa State going three overtimes with an FCS school is a liar or time traveler.

The Cyclones weren’t impressive after starting the season with such high praise. Brock Purdy started his sophomore season going 30-for-41 with 278 yards and two touchdowns. Senior receiver Deshaunte Jones had 14 receptions for 126 yards.

Iowa State entered halftime with a 3-0 lead. Yikes. Northern Iowa led 13-10 entering the fourth quarter, but the Cyclones got game-tying field goal with under a minute to go in regulation to send it into overtime.

The teams traded field goals in the first extra period. Iowa State scored a touchdown to start the second OT frame, but Northern Iowa answered. Many called for UNI to go for two and the win, but the Panthers opted for a third OT. UNI started the third overtime with a field goal, and Iowa State got in the end zone and escaped.

Iowa State has a week to collect itself before playing in-state rival Iowa on Sept. 14.

Kansas State 49, Nicholls 14

The Wildcats looked like classic K-State in their first game under Chris Klieman.

Kansas State ran for 361 yards and five touchdowns Saturday. Four K-State running backs had at least 10 carries. James Gilbert led the way, gaining 115 yards on his 18 attempts.

Skylar Thompson didn’t put up ridiculous yardage numbers, but he was efficient. Thompson completed 73 percent of his passes for 212 yards and a touchdown. He also ran for 30 yards on just three carries for another score.

K-State hosts a 1-0 Bowling Green team next weekend.

West Virginia 20, James Madison 13

It wasn’t quite as shocking as Iowa State going to three overtimes, but West Virginia didn’t have a great Week 1.

The Mountaineers ran the ball just 24 times compared to the 42 pass attempts OU transfer Austin Kendall put in the air. Kendall completed 27 of those for 260 yards and two touchdowns.

The Dukes did quite the opposite, as JMU ran the ball 48 times but gained only 172 rushing yards and a single touchdown in doing so.

Speaking of underwhelming starts, West Virginia goes on the road to play Missouri next week (which lost its season opener to Wyoming).

Texas Tech 45, Montana State 10

The Red Raiders didn’t look too different in Matt Wells’ first game.

Alan Bowman threw 55 passes, completing 40 of them for 436 yards and two touchdowns. He also ran for another score.

Sophomore Xavier White was Bowman’s preferred target of the evening. White had 107 receiving yards and this 45-yard score.

The Red Raiders will host UTEP next week.

Baylor 56, Stephen F. Austin 17

Baylor had no issues against the Lumberjacks.

Charlie Brewer was an efficient 21-for-31 for 199 yards and three touchdowns.

Gerry Bohanon was dynamic in his opportunities. The former four-star prospect was 5-for-6 with 51 passing yards and a score, and on the ground, Bohanon ran 84 yards on six attempts.

The Bears host UTSA next weekend.

TCU 39, Arkansas-Pine Bluff 7

Like a few Big 12 teams, the Horned Frogs had some quarterback questions entering 2019, but there wasn’t one defining answer Saturday.

Kansas State transfer Alex Delton got the start, but he and Max Duggan rotated every two series. Their passing lines were similar. Duggan went 16-for-23 for 165 yards and a touchdown. Delton went 10-for-22 for 119 yards and no scores. The edge Duggan gained in the passing game was probably nullified with Delton’s team-best 67 rushing yards. Fifty-four of those came on one run.

The Horned Frogs had trouble holding on to the ball, as TCU players had seven fumbles, but the Frogs lost only two.

TCU has the week off before going to Purdue on Sept. 14.

No. 10 Texas 45, Louisiana Tech 14

The Big 12 Texas schools all preformed well in Week 1, and the Texas school in the Big 12 was no different.

Sam Ehlinger had 310 total yards and four touchdowns. Texas’ defense created three turnovers, and La Tech didn’t score until the fourth quarter.

It gets interesting next weekend, though, as the Longhorns play LSU in the premiere nonconference game among Big 12 teams this year.

No. 4 Oklahoma 49, Houston 31

Oklahoma — still good.

The Sooners and Houston had Sunday to themselves. Jalen Hurts was remarkable in his first game at his new school as the Sooners blasted the Cougars, a team that was supposed to be the best team a Big 12 school played this weekend.

Hurts had 508 total yards (332 passing and 176 rushing) with six total touchdowns (three passing and three rushing). He also had only three balls hit the ground, going 20-for-23 on the night.

It was also a big night for sophomore receiver Charleston Rambo. Rambo had 105 yards and a touchdown on only three receptions.

The Sooners host South Dakota next weekend.
