Big 12 Update: First Full Week Brings Trio of Tight Games
It was the first full week of Big 12 play, meaning instead of this post recapping nine games, there is only four to sum up.
It looks like the Big 12 will be full of tight games this season. The three games that didn’t include Oklahoma schools were decided by a combined 16 points.
Here’s a recap of Big 12 games from Week 5.
No. 6 Oklahoma 66, Baylor 33
A crazy stat: Kyler Murray threw 21 passes and had 432 yards. Charlie Brewer threw 60 passes and had 400 yards.
Murray sat out the Sooners’ first drive after a team rules violation, but when he came in, he was ridiculous. He finished with seven total touchdowns.
Murray’s play set up a nice game for freshman running back Kennedy Brooks, who averaged 13.4 yards on his eight carries and finished with 107 yards and two touchdowns.
Marquise Brown and CeeDee Lamb finished with a combined eight catches, 233 yards and three touchdowns.

No. 12 West Virginia 42, No. 25 Texas Tech 34
There for a while, West Virginia was making OSU’s loss against Texas Tech last week look worse than it already was. The Mountaineers led Tech 28-7 after one quarter. That’s 11 more points than OSU scored on Tech in an entire game.
The Red Raiders came back and made a game of it, outscoring West Virginia 24-7 in the second half.
A big story of the game was Tech quarterback Alan Bowman’s departure. Bowman got sandwiched between two Mountaineer defenders and left the game.
Alan Bowman needs some milk. Dear lord WVU isn’t playing around today.

It was another nice outing for Will Grier. He finished with 370 passing yards and three touchdowns.
The West Virginia defense also picked off Tech quarterbacks three times.
No. 18 Texas 19, Kansas State 14
This was a weird one where Texas scored all of its points in the first half, and Kansas State scored all of its points in the second.
Texas quarterback Sam Ehlinger had a 21-yard catch, which tied the game’s longest play from scrimmage. As a passer, Ehlinger finished 29-for-36 with 207 yards and a touchdown.
K-State’s offense continued to struggle. The Wildcats had 217 yards of total offense. On the year, K-State’s 321 yards per game is only better than Iowa State in the Big 12.
TCU 17, Iowa State 14
Speaking of the conference’s most struggling offense. Iowa State had 198 yards of offense Saturday. That’s a big yikes.
The Cyclones’ defense kept the team in the game, forcing three turnovers, but Jonathan Song was the Horned Frogs hero, hitting a 28-yard field goal with 37 seconds left to give TCU its third win.
The result has to be concerning for TCU, which was at home. It’s been a sporadic year for the Horned Frogs, with a tight game against Ohio State in Week 3 to this struggle against Iowa State.
