One. More. Week.

After Week 12 of the college football season, there are still four teams with hopes to play for a Big 12 title on Dec. 2 in Arlington. Texas leads the way, while Oklahoma State, Oklahoma and Kansas State are tied for second with two conference losses apiece and fighting for that last slot in the championship game.

Texas stayed atop the standings with a 26-16 win against Iowa State in Ames. The Cyclones were also part of that second-place mess heading into the weekend, but a third conference loss basically erased their chances to play at AT&T Stadium. Texas still needs to beat Texas Tech at home next week to secure its spot in the title game and keep its College Football Playoff dreams a reality.

OSU, OU and K-State all survived scares to stay at two conference losses and tied for second behind the Longhorns. If the season ended today, OSU would play Texas for a Big 12 title since the Cowboys beat OU and K-State in the regular season.

OSU picked things up after a sluggish first half to beat Houston 43-30 and avoid a second straight loss. OU left Provo with a 31-24 win after taking the lead in the fourth quarter. K-State outlasted instate rival Kansas 31-27 in a game that was a lot of fun to watch and featured the Jayhawks’ third-string quarterback.

Here are Week 12 results from the Big 12, updated standings and what needs to happen the last week of the season for the Pokes to play for a Big 12 title for the second time in three years.

What Gets OSU to Arlington?

Step 1: Win. If the Cowboys don’t win, the rest of the conference results don’t really matter. OSU has to beat BYU in Boone Pickens Stadium for its season finale to get to Arlington. If the Cowboys lose Saturday, then fate will really have to be on their side.

If the Pokes do win, then it’s very likely they’ll have plans the week after. The most realistic scenario that leaves OSU at home even with a season-ending win is OU winning while Texas and K-State both lose. That would knock the Wildcats out of contention and create a three-way tie between OSU, OU and Texas. OSU beat OU, OU beat Texas, but OSU and Texas haven’t met this season. It would be a Red River Rematch for the Big 12 title.

Essentially, as long as the Cowboys and Longhorns both take care of business, they’ll end up meeting after all in 2023, but with a Big 12 title on the line.
