Brandon Weeden Among Quarterbacks Under Colts’ Consideration as Backup

Weeden could find that Luck’s retirement helps prolong his career.

Andrew Luck shocked the NFL world this past week when he abruptly retired due to nagging injuries and a constant cycle of pain. Now a former Cowboy could be in line to earn a job because of it.

According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, 2011 Big 12 champion quarterback Brandon Weeden is among a number of quarterbacks the Colts are considering bringing in to back up Jacoby Brissett, who moved from QB2 to QB1 with Luck’s retirement. Weeden is in a battle with Brock Osweiler and Matt Cassel to potentially earn a shot at the 53-man roster as Brissett’s backup.

Weeden has played for three teams since his career began in 2012 with the Browns, which last included a two-season stint with the Houston Texans. Earlier this summer he hinted that his NFL career could be over, but that he’s also actively looking for a job and even open to doing some media.

If Weeden is going to get back in the league, it’ll only be as a backup — and Indy is as good a spot as any. For the Texans the last two years, he played a role as mentor to Deshaun Watson, now one of the most electric talents in the NFL. If Indianapolis takes into consideration his potential contributions as a vet and mentor to Brissett, it could help Weeden prolong his NFL career at least another season. And ironically, the job in Indy could officially give him a chance to outlast Luck, the quarterback whom he outdueled in his final college outing in the Fiesta Bowl, and for the same franchise from which Luck retired.
