Braydon Johnson was a blossoming star for the Cowboys last season with real potential to take off in 2020.

Johnson was the Oklahoma State’s third-leading receiver in 2019, finishing the year with 491 yards and four touchdowns. The apex of Johnson’s play came in the Texas Bowl, where he had five catches for 154 yards and two touchdowns against Texas A&M.

“I feel like that boosted my confidence a lot, just making those plays during the end of the year,” Johnson said Tuesday. “I was just ready to put in work with my team and just get better and get them better, lead them so we can all come together and get a Big 12 championship.”

A few weeks back, OSU offensive coordinator Kasey Dunn, who also coaches the Cowboys’ receivers, said Johnson was in a position battle with LSU transfer Dee Anderson for the outside receiver spot opposite Tylan Wallace.

Whether Johnson is an everyday starter or not in 2020, he is still a deep threat that Sanders will likely find at some point during the season. Johnson’s speed rivals Chuba Hubbard. The two apparently raced in a workout in the past with inconclusive results.

Johnson’s speed was on display in nearly all of his touchdowns last season. Three of his four scores were 69 yards, 50 yards and 42 yards, respectively.

“I’d say my biggest focus was my releases and just practicing catching the deep ball because I feel like that’s my strong suit,” Johnson said. “So, those were my two main focuses during the offseason. I’ve learned a lot more from just being in the meetings and learning from Coach Dunn. It’s coming along very well.”
