Cade Cunningham Named to Wooden Award Top 25 Watch List
Could Cade be OSU’s first Wooden Award winner?
Oklahoma State freshman Cade Cunningham was one of 25 players named to the Wooden Award Midseason Top 25 Watchlist on Wednesday. This designation precedes the Wooden National Player of the Year Award and the Wooden All-America Team selections.
Through 10 games, Cunningham leads the Big 12 in scoring at 19.1 points per game and is the nation’s No. 2 scorer among freshmen. He’s also averaging 6.1 rebounds, 3.7 assists, 1.4 steals and 0.9 steals — landing at No. 1 or No. 2 in all of those categories for the Cowboys.
Before the season, Cunningham was named to the watch lists for both the Cousy Award and Naismith Trophy, both also national player of the year awards.
The Wooden Awards work as such. Voters will select a National Ballot of the 15 top college players in the game and then the top 10 will be ranked by voters. The All-American team will be announced the week of the Elite Eight and the top player — the 2021 Wooden Award winner — will be announced after the NCAA Tournament concludes in April.
Former Oklahoma State players John Lucas (twice) and James Anderson were named Wooden Award All-Americans. No Cowboy has been named a Wooden Player of the Year.
