Calvin Bundage, Malcolm Rodriguez Banged Up During Texas Tech Loss

Gundy gave an update on Bundage Monday at his presser.

A hobbled Calvin Bundage played the first half — and some of the second half — limping around the Boone Pickens Stadium turf before being yanked to rest an apparent leg injury.

According to the Cowboy radio broadcast, he left for the locker room to receive treatment on his right calf in the first half. He returned later and played sparingly, but it was clear the Bundage burst was absent as he tried to fight through pain.

“He relies on speed, and he was not moving very well,” said Mike Gundy on Monday of his starting outside linebacker. “We should’ve taken him out. We should’ve taken him out right away, as soon as it happened.”

Defensive coordinator Jim Knowles said after the game Saturday that Bundage wasn’t the only defensive player who got dinged during the game. Malcolm Rodriguez, one of the starting safeties, also got injured. It caused an in-game shuffle for OSU in the secondary, and forced Kolby Peel and Jarrick Bernard into huge roles.

“Calvin was dinged up all game and he tried to fight through it,” said Knowles. “Malcolm was dinged up, too. We took some body blows, had a lot of young guys playing. They got thrown in the fire.”

The status of Rodriguez and Bundage is unclear as OSU prepares to face Kansas on Saturday for its first road game of the season. If Bundage can’t go, Devin Harper will be thrust into the starting role. As for a Rodriguez replacement should it be necessary, Tre Sterling is listed as his backup.

His injury could also equate to more playing time for true freshmen Jarrick Bernard and Kolby Peel, both of which have played in all four games to this point and are on the cusp of burning their redshirt based off the newly-implemented NCAA rule this season.
