Cornerback Depth Continuing to Develop in Non-Conference Play

Published

on

One of the most buzzed about positions this offseason was the cornerback position, where the Cowboys have depth and speed in both the first and second units.

In the first unit, veterans Kevin Peterson and Ashton Lampkin lead the pack, with graduate transfer Michael Hunter and sophomore Ramon Richards representing the second unit.

The non-conference schedule has allowed for further development beyond the first two units. The third unit has seen a good deal of playing time, and have been respectable backups up to this point.

The third unit is represented by sophomore Darius Curry and senior Miketavius Jones, who have both filled in admirably on rotation, allowing the depth at an already skilled position to further develop. With a pass-happy Big 12, that depth could pay dividends down the road.

For now, I would expect Jones to revert back to mainly special teams play as the season progresses. Curry could see time in the rotation depending on the scheme. But their game experience is invaluable to a defensive unit that may be relied upon heavily once they hit Big 12 play in two weeks.
