Cowboy Back Depth Chart Primer: Unknown Marks 2017

on

After a look at two positions we know a lot about (quarterback and running back), it’s time to take a look at one that’s a bit more of a puzzle.

Cowboy Back

Note: I really have no idea on the depth chart here, so I’m just listing the roster in alphabetical order and then discussing each.

  • Britton Abbott – RS Jr.
  • Dawson Bassett – RS Sr.
  • Keenen Brown – RS Jr.
  • Sione Finefeuiakai – Jr.
  • Baron Odom – Fr.

This group might be the biggest mystery of them all.  Brown is the guy who has the most ability as a pass catcher, but is somewhat of an unknown as a blocker. He is someone who is a mismatch at that position, though, and I would certainly like to see him on the field to see what he can do.

Finefeuiuakai was brought in specifically to be a block first guy, which is definitely needed.  He is built like a bowling ball, about 6’0 250 and has nice tape. I’m excited to see what he can do. Zac Veatch was such a huge part of this offense last year, he was the catalyst of the run game. OSU needs Finefeuiakai to try to replace his production as a strong side lead blocker, but he has big shoes to fill.

Overall I would say this group is a year away from being overly productive. Given the depth at WR, and the lack of proven players here, I would expect Yurchich to find ways to get four WRs on the field more often. That is unless 1-2 of these guys separate themselves in camp.

My main concern is OSU had most of its success running the ball off a guard and Cowboy Back leading the way. If we do see less of the Cowboy Back in the game, Mike & Mike will have to find more traditional ways to run the ball out of the gun.

I’ve heard good things on Britton Abbott — that he might be a guy who has the skill set to do a little bit of both, blocking and catching. I’ll be excited to see if he gets an opportunity.
