Cowboy Baseball Continues Tradition of Challenging Schedule with Eleven 2017 Regional Qualifiers

We are officially one week away from the start of baseball season for Oklahoma State. The Cowboys will look to make their sixth-straight trip to the NCAA Tournament under head coach Josh Holliday. To do so though, they’ll have to navigate another difficult schedule.

Head Coach Josh Holliday spoke to the media last week to discuss the season, and talked about OSU’s scheduling practices.

Since arriving, OSU hasn’t seen many SEC teams on the schedule. (For those who don’t know, the SEC is to college baseball as it is to college football: dominant). That doesn’t mean that the Pokes haven’t scheduled well, though.

OSU often makes trips out west to face top Pac-12 teams like Arizona, Arizona State and Oregon State. In fact, OSU often faces its toughest tests on the road, and usually starts each season away from Stillwater.

That’s no different this year with trips to Arizona State, and a season-opening road trip to Texas State in San Marcos, Texas.

As for quality competition, in all, OSU will face five teams in the nonconference that made a regional last season;

Oral Roberts — Feb. 20 Stillwater | Apr. 20 Stillwater | May 1 Tulsa

Marist — Feb. 23, 24, 25 Stillwater

Missouri State — Mar. 7 Springfield, MO | Mar. 17 Stillwater (Missouri State won the Fayetteville regional)

Dallas Baptist — Mar. 13 Stillwater | Apr. 24 Dallas

Iowa — May 4, 5, 6 Iowa City, IA

Plus, six other Big 12 teams made the tournament last season in Texas, OU, TCU, TTU, WVU, Baylor. I’d be shocked if that many didn’t go this year as well.

And as for that weekend trip to Tempe I mentioned earlier? While the Sun Devils didn’t make the postseason last year, they’ve been a common mainstay at regionals as of late, and certainly won’t hurt the RPI being on the schedule.

There may not be any SEC teams on the schedule this season, but that doesn’t mean it’s not one that won’t test OSU and help them reach the postseason for a seventh straight year.

OSU opens the season next Friday with a three-game weekend series in San Marcos, Texas. You can find the full schedule on OSU’s official website.
