Cowboy Wide Receivers Weigh In On OSU Quarterback Competition

The start of Oklahoma State’s football season is inching ever closer, as the Cowboys held their media day Saturday in Gallagher-Iba Arena.

A major talking point throughout the offseason has been who is going to step into the void that third-round draft pick Mason Rudolph left at quarterback. I went around and talked to some wide receivers and got their takes on the competition.

On the three-man race:

Patrick McKaufman: “It’s going to be a good show. We’ll find out Aug. 3 who’s gonna be the man. We’re just all here to win.”

Landon Wolf: “I think it’s good. Obviously, Coach said Corn is number one right now, Taylor. Everybody is pushing each other, so I think it’s good. It’s good competition.”

Tylan Wallace: “I think all three guys are all pretty talented. Cornelius being the older guy and being here the longest is probably the right move, but all of those guys are talented, and they all can just go out there and play. I feel pretty comfortable with Cornelius out there.”

Tracin Wallace: “Corn is a veteran, so he knows more than everybody else. He has the system more down than anybody, definitely be more comfortable with him.”

On Taylor Cornelius:

Wolf: “Corn has always been one to lead by example. Obviously, Mason was more vocal. Corn just leads by example. He does what he needs to do to take of business and he speaks up when he needs to.”

Tylan: “Everybody leads in a different way. Mason was a more vocal leader, and now Cornelius is more of a leader by example in a way. He likes to just go out there and do him and everybody picks up that vibe off of him.”

Tracin: “He’s still catching on and learning some things (about leadership). He kind of has his errors every now and then, but you know he does want to be a leader.”

Tyron Johnson: “We worked very hard in the summer. We’re in Stillwater, there ain’t much you can do but catch passes from Cornelius. We built chemistry over the summer.”

On Spencer Sanders:

Wolf: “We haven’t seen much of him. It’s only like the second or third practice, but he has a strong arm from what I’ve seen. He seems like he knows what he’s doing. He’s learned the playbook pretty fast.”

Tylan: “Oh, man, Spencer. I’ve never seen a dude who can throw such a pretty ball, throw it so far, before. He can really throw the thing from what I’ve seen. That’s really special about him.”

Tracin: “He has a very quick release. That’s nice as a receiver to see the ball come out real fast, you don’t have to look at the quarterback for so long. He’s also a dual-threat, so he can run a little bit.”

Johnson: “He’s a young guy, polished. I think he’s going to be another great one. Good thrower. He can throw deep.”

On Dru Brown:

Wolf: “He knows the playbook pretty fast, which is surprising. He’s obviously been studying the playbook for a while and getting his reads down fast, and he has a strong arm. You can tell he’s comfortable in the position.”

Tylan: “To me, in my opinion, he looks like a little version of Baker Mayfield in a way. He looks pretty good. Dual-threat, just like he is. He looks like he can really ball out there.”

Tracin: “Watching him in a couple practices, he’s not scared to sit in the pocket. He has some experience with being a little bit under pressure.”
