Cox: Five Predictions for Oklahoma State Sports in 2020

Predicting Chuba’s 2020 and a NCAA berth for OSU hoops.

It’s a new year full of new possibilities — and chances for me to go out on new lengthy limbs. You’ve already enjoyed Kyle Porter’s five predictions for 2020, now I’ll lay mine out.

First off, let’s check in on where my head was a year ago.

2019 Predictions

Spencer Sanders earns All-Big 12 Honors: Close, but not really. Sanders was not an all-conference selection but he did win Offensive Freshman of the Year, the first Cowboy to do so since Justice Hill in 2016.

OSU Baseball hosts a Regional: Nailed it! Sort of. The Cowboys did play host as the No. 9 seed, but Mother Nature stepped in and the tournament was moved to Bricktown due to flooding. It was a shame, too, as closing down Allie P. Reynolds to head to a Super Regional would have been sweet.

Tylan Wallace will have fewer receiving yards in 2019: Me when I read this.

This was not a jinx. This was not a jinx. This was not a jinx.

My rationale last January was that whoever would be taking snaps wouldn’t lock in so heavily on one guy, not necessarily true. But Tylan was on pace to finish just behind his 2018 total (1,468 from 1,491), but I’m taking the L on this one.

OSU hoops will win eight Big 12 games: Nope. 5-13.

OSU will win Bedlam in football: I’ll see myself out.

2020 Predictions

1. Chuba Hubbard gets invited to NYC: At the time of this writing, Chuba’s draft status for 2020 is TBD. I’m not Mike Gundy confident that he comes back, but if he does I’m confident in Mike Gundy riding him just as heavy next year. He’d probably have to lead the nation in rushing again but that, with the pub he’s earned against all odds this year, should get him to New York.

2. OSU wins eight Big 12 games in hoops: I’m doubling down on last year’s bet. If this team stays healthy, I think they can finish in the middle of the Big 12 which is right around that eight-win mark which means I’m expecting to cover some meaningful games in March.

3. Braydon Johnson racks up 800 receiving yards: I won’t claim to be the founder of the Wolverine Fan Club, but I’ve been a card-carrying member for some time. With Tylan returning for his senior season and with another year under Spencer Sanders’ belt, there’s no reason Braydon isn’t a dynamic deep threat the Cowboys go to often. It would be criminal if they don’t take advantage of having both of those speedsters on the outside.

4. Shane Illingworth will start at least one game: This might seem contrary to the status quo at OSU — taking advantage of the redshirt rule to help your four-star QB, I mean — but injuries happen and they especially happen to dual-threat quarterbacks prone to hurdle opposing linebackers. ???

5. Mike Gundy will makes waves by talking with another school: Either one of two scenarios could play out to make this happen: 1) OSU under-performs and a meeting with (insert middling SEC program’s) brass gets the heat off of him, or 2) the Cowboys’ Big 3 set the Big 12 ablaze and he parlays some speculation into another raise. I don’t like it. You don’t like it. But it’s a part of the world he lives in (college coaching, I mean), and it feels like we’re about due for another episode.
