Cox: Ranking my Five Favorite Uniforms of the 2017 Football Season
One of the perks of following, covering, fan-boying over Oklahoma State football, is the plethora of uniform combinations that the equipment staff comes up with, and the fun of prognosticating which pants, gloves and helmet will be unveiled during each pregame warmup.
In Year 2 with this new kit from Nike, there were a number of tasteful offerings put together and some all-time helmets. Here are my five favorite uni combos from the 2017 season.
5. Orange/White/Black w/ Ginormous Pete
Maybe this one tickles my nostalgic bone. It definitely appeals to my affinity for tri-colored themes. But this Giant Pete/White/Black combo rings true for last season and for OSU’s trips to Austin.
It’s the exact same combo Rudolph wore on his first trip to Darrell K. Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium and in both games he was probably lucky to come out with a W.
4. Black/Black/Black w/ Brand — Bedlam
This combos sort of works by default. The all-black look somehow improves with the metallic (?) orange brand on the helmet. For God’s sake, it’s the brand! And that black-lined brand somehow matches perfectly with OSU’s white-lined new jersey font.
Maybe it works because it just somehow works. Who am I kidding? It’s all-black with an orange brand.
3. White/Black/White w/ ‘Patriot Pete’ — Camping World Bowl
This is just a clean look. The “Patriot Pete” helmet is one of my favorite additions the staff has made over the last few years. It debuted in Week 1 against Tulsa and completed its book-end of the season against Virginia Tech in the Camping World Bowl.
I know this might be an unpopular pick and W/B/W shouldn’t work, but I just like it. Make your own list.
2. Black/White/Gray w/ Small Pete — Texas Tech
I am a lover of all combos tri-colored and the Cowboys donned three such medleys in 2017, but this was the best. The black letters with orange outline was just enough orange to highlight the black/white theme, and I — like Mike Gundy — am a sucker for the gunmetal color.
1. White/Orange/White w/ Throwback Helmet – Homecoming (Baylor)
When the Cowboys welcomed Baylor during Homecoming Weekend 2017, they emerged from the tunnel sporting a brand new throwback helmet. Retro lids have become somewhat of a Homecoming tradition in Stillwater and they’ve done them well. In 2015, it was the late-1960s OSU brand and then in 2016 the Jimmy Johnson-era matte black/old-school brand set my heart a flutter.
These 1957 throwbacks did not disappoint. This combo is the winner based on these clean-look lids that somehow meshes perfectly with these modern threads.
