CBS likes Boynton

Promising comments here on the Boynton hire:

Oklahoma State wasn’t sure what to do after it unexpectedly lost Underwood. Boynton aced his interview, beating out fellow assistants, in addition to a few sitting head coaches and, most notably, former Cowboys point guard Doug Gottlieb, who publicly lobbied for the job.

Boynton is 35 and a first-time head coach. He will have tremendous challenges ahead. Coaching in the Big 12 is stacked, but Boynton is built to run a program. He could wind up as the most surprising but best bargain of a hire of any made in 2017.  [CBS Sports]

A scathing “had he (Underwood) been given contract renegotiation options sooner, he’d still be in Stillwater” started the summary but it got better. Hearing objective third parties talk about how Boynton looks like a program builder and potential of being the “best bargain of a hire of any made in 2017” is good news.

Jawun’s Draft Stock

Evans responds to questions about where he fits in a guard-loaded draft class.

Asked where he fits in a deep draft class and if he thought about that before declaring:

I feel like I’m one of the great point guards out there… a point guard that gets my teammates open ya know and making my teammates better.

When asked about why he’s not talked about with the elite point guards in this draft:

That’s put a big chip on my shoulder, wondering why I’m not up there with those point guards. Ya know they’re good point guards too but I’m just as up there as them. [SportsIllustrated]

Four of the top six guards currently projecting in the top ten are 6’4″ or taller with the others being 6’2″ or 6’3″. Jawun at 6’0″ flat isn’t “just as up there”. And that’s likely an inherent disadvantage in the eye test.

He does a good job of getting his shots but that’s a big jump to the next level and making teams feel confident about that will be imperative in workouts. Chris Paul, Jawun’s most common NBA comp, stands at 6’0″, so there is a precedent.

This broke last night, so he’s definitely gone.

ESPN’s Football Power Index is drunk and needs to go home.

Cowgirl softball ran into a buzz saw last night against Tulsa:
